What to Expect During a Diagnostic Ultrasound: A Patient’s Guide

Blog

If your doctor has recommended an ultrasound, you may be wondering what to expect. Ultrasounds are non-invasive, painless procedures that use sound waves to capture images of the inside of your body, helping doctors diagnose and monitor conditions. Whether it’s for a routine check-up or a specific concern, here’s a breakdown of what happens during an ultrasound at Radiology Associates.

Before the Ultrasound

Before your ultrasound, you may be given specific instructions, depending on the area being imaged. For example, you may be asked to fast for a few hours or drink plenty of water if the ultrasound is focused on your abdomen or pelvic area. These instructions help ensure the clearest possible images during the scan.

When you arrive at Radiology Associates, our friendly staff will guide you through the check-in process and answer any questions you may have. We understand that some patients may feel nervous, especially if this is your first time, so we aim to create a welcoming and calming atmosphere.

During the Ultrasound

Once you’re ready, you’ll be asked to lie down on an exam table. The ultrasound technologist, also known as a sonographer, will apply a special gel to the area being examined. This gel helps the ultrasound probe make better contact with your skin, ensuring clearer images.

The sonographer will then move the ultrasound probe (a small handheld device) over the area, and you may feel light pressure, but the procedure is generally painless. You’ll be able to see the live images on a screen, as the sound waves create pictures of your internal organs, tissues, or blood flow in real-time.

How Long Does an Ultrasound Take?

Most ultrasound exams take between 15 and 45 minutes, depending on the complexity of the scan. If it’s a detailed scan, like an abdominal or pelvic ultrasound, it may take a little longer. Our team ensures that the process is smooth and efficient while maintaining high standards of care.

After the Ultrasound

Once the exam is complete, the sonographer will wipe off the gel, and you’ll be able to resume your normal activities immediately. There are no side effects, and ultrasounds don’t involve radiation, making them safe for patients of all ages, including pregnant women.

The images will be reviewed by one of our experienced radiologists, and your doctor will receive the results shortly after. Depending on the type of ultrasound, your doctor may discuss the findings with you during a follow-up appointment or over the phone.

Sports Injuries and Radiology: How Diagnostic Imaging Can Help You Get Back in the Game

Blog

Summer is a time for outdoor activities and sports, but it also brings a higher risk of sports injuries. Whether you’re a weekend warrior hitting the trails or an amateur athlete on the field, understanding the role of diagnostic imaging in sports injuries is crucial for quick and effective recovery. Radiology Associates offers a range of imaging services that play a vital role in diagnosing, managing, and recovering from sports injuries.

The Importance of Accurate Diagnosis

The first step in treating any sports injury effectively is an accurate diagnosis. Common injuries during summer include sprains, fractures, dislocations, and muscle tears. Diagnostic imaging is an invaluable tool in identifying the exact nature and extent of an injury, ensuring that the treatment plan is appropriate and targeted.

Types of Diagnostic Imaging for Sports Injuries

X-rays

X-rays are one of the most common imaging techniques used for diagnosing broken bones and joint abnormalities. They provide clear images of dense structures like bone, which can help in identifying fractures and dislocations.

MRI Scans

MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) is particularly useful for diagnosing soft tissue injuries, such as ligament tears, muscle strains, and tendon injuries. MRI uses strong magnets and radio waves to create detailed images of organs and tissues. This method is highly beneficial for athletes as it does not involve radiation and provides a detailed view of the internal structures.

CT Scans

CT (Computed Tomography) scans are sometimes used to provide a more detailed view of bone and joint injuries when X-rays are not conclusive. CT scans can quickly produce cross-sectional images of the body, which are useful for diagnosing complex fractures.
Ultrasound: This imaging technique is used for real-time visualization of muscles, tendons, and ligaments. It is particularly useful for assessing tendon tears and for guiding procedures like injections and aspirations.

Preventive Measures and Tips

While diagnostic imaging is essential for managing injuries after they occur, prevention is always better than cure. Here are some tips to prevent sports injuries:

Warm Up Before Playing Sports

Always take time to warm up and cool down before and after physical activities. Dynamic stretches and light cardio can increase blood flow to the muscles and reduce the risk of injuries.

Use Proper Equipment

Wear appropriate footwear and protective gear suited to your sport. This can greatly reduce your risk of injuries.

Listen to Your Body

Pay attention to what your body tells you. Avoid pushing through pain, as this could lead to more serious injuries.

Stay Hydrated

Keep your body hydrated, especially during intense activities and in hot weather. Dehydration can lead to fatigue, which increases the risk of injuries.

How Radiology Associates Can Help

At Radiology Associates, we are equipped with the latest imaging technologies to support athletes and active individuals in maintaining their health and fitness. Our expert team is here to provide fast and accurate diagnoses to help you understand your injuries and recover faster.

Prioritizing Men’s Health: The Role of Prostate Ultrasounds and MRIs in Early Detection and Management

Blog

As we observe Men’s Health Month this June, it’s a timely reminder to spotlight a crucial aspect of men’s health, prostate wellness. Prostate cancer is one of the leading health issues faced by men, particularly as they age. At Radiology Associates, we are committed to advancing men’s health through state-of-the-art diagnostic tools like prostate ultrasounds and MRIs. These technologies play a pivotal role in the early detection and management of prostate issues, including prostate cancer.

Understanding Prostate Health Challenges

Prostate cancer might not show symptoms in its early stages, which is why screening is vital. For men, especially those over the age of 50 or with a family history of prostate cancer, regular screenings are essential for early detection and successful management of the disease.

Prostate Ultrasound: A First Look

Prostate ultrasound, also known as transrectal ultrasound (TRUS), is often one of the first diagnostic steps taken when prostate abnormalities are suspected:

  • Procedure: During a prostate ultrasound, a small probe is inserted into the rectum to provide detailed images of the prostate gland.
  • Benefits: This method is quick, non-invasive, and offers real-time images that help in evaluating the prostate’s size, shape, and any conspicuous abnormalities that might indicate health issues.
  • Uses: Ultrasound is particularly useful in guiding biopsies to diagnose prostate cancer, ensuring that samples are accurately taken from areas that look suspicious.

MRI: Enhancing Prostate Cancer Diagnosis

MRI scans provide a more detailed image and are increasingly being used to complement or in some cases, replace the need for a biopsy:

  • Advanced Imaging: MRI uses strong magnetic fields and radio waves to produce detailed images of the prostate and surrounding tissues. This method is excellent for identifying areas within the prostate that may need further testing.
  • Benefits: MRI scans are non-invasive and do not involve radiation. They are particularly useful in detecting aggressive cancer types and planning appropriate treatment strategies.

Comparing Both Methods

While ultrasound provides a good initial examination and is quicker to access through Alberta public health, MRI offers superior detail and higher accuracy, particularly in complex cases. The choice between these methods depends on individual risk factors, preliminary screening results, and personal health history.
This Men’s Health Month, Radiology Associates encourages all men to take proactive steps towards managing their prostate health. Whether through an initial ultrasound screening or a comprehensive MRI, understanding and utilizing these diagnostic tools can significantly aid in the early detection and treatment of prostate issues.
Our expert team is here to provide guidance, support, and advanced diagnostic care to help you maintain your health now and in the future.
