Pelvic
Ultrasound

Pelvic ultrasound is a sophisticated diagnostic procedure that leverages sound waves to generate real-time images of the pelvic region’s internal structures. This technique, known for its safety due to the absence of radiation, is a primary method for evaluating pelvic anatomy in both men and women.

During a pelvic ultrasound, a skilled sonographer utilizes a transducer to emit and receive sound waves. These waves are transformed into images that provide detailed insights into the pelvic organs, aiding in the diagnosis and management of various conditions.

Pelvic Ultrasound for Women

Women may undergo pelvic ultrasound for a comprehensive evaluation of the uterus, ovaries, and other pelvic structures. Preparation includes arriving with a full bladder, which enhances the visibility of pelvic organs. The examination might include:

Transabdominal
Ultrasound

Conducted through the abdomen, this approach involves applying gel to the skin and moving the transducer across the pelvic area.

Transvaginal
Ultrasound

With patient consent, a slender transducer is inserted into the vagina, offering detailed views of the uterus and ovaries. Patients are allowed to empty their bladder before this part of the exam.

The choice between transabdominal and transvaginal ultrasound depends on the specific diagnostic needs and how clearly the anatomy is visualized.

Radiology Associates also offers ultrasound technology to examine IUD placement before and after insertion, enhancing clinical outcomes.

Pelvic Ultrasound for Men

For men, pelvic ultrasound focuses on examining the bladder, prostate gland, and sometimes the kidneys, using the transabdominal method. A full bladder is essential for optimal visualization of these organs.

What to Expect During Your Appointment

Transabdominal Ultrasound (Both Genders)

You may adjust your clothing to expose the lower abdomen. A gel will be applied, and the sonographer will gently press the transducer against your skin, moving it around to capture images. You can empty your bladder once the examination is complete.

Transvaginal Ultrasound (Women)

You will be provided a gown and asked to undress from the waist down. The sonographer will ensure your comfort and privacy as you self-insert the transducer, covered with a sterile probe and gel.
