Kidney & Bladder
ULTRASOUND

A renal ultrasound is an essential examination for evaluating the kidneys, ureters, and bladder. It plays a crucial role in identifying various conditions such as cysts, tumors, kidney stones, abscesses, and infections. Additionally, it assesses the bladder’s contour and capacity, aiding in the diagnosis of issues related to urinary symptoms.

Common Questions About
Kidney & Bladder Ultrasound

Your healthcare provider may recommend a renal ultrasound for symptoms like swelling, pain, or bleeding, or if lab tests suggest abnormalities in your kidneys or bladder.

To prepare, drink at least 24 ounces of clear fluid one hour before your appointment and avoid emptying your bladder. A full bladder is critical for a comprehensive evaluation of the bladder and surrounding structures.

Renal ultrasounds are quick, typically completed within 30 minutes, and are pain-free. You might need to change into a gown for the procedure. The sonographer will apply a gel to your abdomen to facilitate sound wave transmission and move the transducer across your skin to capture images. You may be asked to adjust your position or hold your breath to enhance image quality. After initial imaging, you’ll be asked to empty your bladder for additional scans.

Renal ultrasound is a low-risk procedure. You may experience discomfort due to the pressure from the transducer, especially with a full bladder, but this is necessary for capturing optimal images.
